MustafaAmin (Arabic: مصطفى أمين) (born February 21, 1914 in Cairo, died April 13, 1997 in Cairo) was, for decades, the best-known columnist and journalist in the Middle East.[citation needed] Amin iswidely regarded as one of the Arabworld's most influential intellectual figures.[citation needed] As the 1944 founder of the Akhbar El Yomnewspaper organization, he is also seen as one of the fathers of modern Arab journalism. He diedin Cairo. In 1944 hetook the post as editor of El-Ethnin, then, with his twin brother Ali Amin,launched the Saturday weekly paper Akhbar-el-Yom. Based on the style ofAmerican Sunday papers, it still boasts the largest circulation of any weeklypaper in the MiddleEast and the Arabic-speakingworld.[citation needed] Four years later the two brotherslaunched the daily Al-Akhbar, which some 50 years on is the most popular dailynewspaper in the Arabic-speaking world.[citation needed] Within two years, the Akhbar el-Yomgroup took over Akher Sa'a. In 1951 the brothers founded two more weeklies,Akher Lahza and Al-Guil, a colour magazine for the young.
