Ayers Rock, also known as Uluru, is a huge rock formation, made upof sandstone and is located in the southern part of Northern Territory, central Australia. Uluru is said to be a sacred place for theAboriginals living in Australia. The rocky formation mountain has manywater holes, caves, natural springs and old historic paintings. Thesite is a part of UNESCO and is listed in the World Heritage Site. The word Uluru has no meaning. It was in the year 1873, when the newname was given to Uluru and now it is also called Ayers Rock. This namewas to given to the rock as an honor to The Chief Secretary, Sir HenryAyers. During the year 1993, a new policy was created, where both thenames could be made official and thus making both the Aboriginals andthe Australians happy. The Ayers Rock is said to be the greatest monolith with 9 km incircumference and has a height of 348 m. It is very interesting to knowthat more than two-third of the rock is within the ground. The sun canshiftsand change the colors of Ayers Rock. The colors range right fromred to blue, pink, brown and silver during the rain. It can be excitingwalking up the rock and all you have to do is just keep following themarked lines.
