Dr. Mohamed Abdulla El-Erian (Arabic: محمد العريان;born 1958) is the CEO and co-CIO of PIMCO,the world’s largest bond investor with over US$1 trillion of assets under managementas of 2010. El-Erian previously worked as the investment manager of Harvard Management Company, Harvard University’s US$34.9 billion endowment fund, where hespent almost two years.[1][2] OnSeptember 12, 2007, it was announced that El-Erian would return to PIMCO andtake up his new roles starting January 1, 2008.[3] Harvard recruited El-Erian to fill the void leftin September 2005 by the departure of 15-year investment chief Jack Meyer, whotook almost three dozen Harvard officials to start a Boston-based hedge fund.El-Erian rebuilt the staff and guided the fund to a 23% gain in the fiscal yearended June 30, 2007, adding US$5.7 billion to the world's biggest universityendowment. Background and education El-Erian cited being closer to family one of thereasons of moving back to the West Coast and working for PIMCO. El-Erian isthe son of an Egyptian diplomat and is fluent in Arabic, English and French. Aneconomist, he attended St. John's School, Leatherhead, and aftercompleting his A' Levels went on to receive his bachelor’s and master’s degreesfrom Cambridge University in England, and a second master’s and adoctorate from Oxford University. El-Erian rose through the ranks of the International Monetary Fund to become a deputydirector. He left in 1997 and worked as a managing director at Salomon Smith Barney until joining PIMCO, a unit of Munich-basedinsurer Allianz SE.El-Erian’s name was put forward in 2004 to be the IMF’s managing director.
